Cape Breton

  • Online:

Kenneth MacKenzie is a piper and fiddler from Mabou. He grew up in a Gaelic-speaking household and the Gaelic culture has been an integral part of his life from the early years. Having studied the pipes with Scott MacAulay at the College of Piping in Summerside, in Scotland, and at the Gaelic College over the years, his music is becoming well-known for its irresistible drive and lively, traditional feel.

Growing up in Mabou, Calum MacKenzie was surrounded by traditional music and the Gaelic language. He started learning to play the fiddle and piano at an early age and was tutored by some of the island's foremost teachers. While in high school, Calum was a member of the group Celtic Crew. He has played at numerous concerts, ceilidhs, pubs, dances, and other events on Cape Breton Island and has passed on his musical knowledge through Feisnan and other classes on Cape Breton. Calum taught fiddle and piano at Ceolas school in Scotland through the Summer of 2004. While working in Scotland, he performed with such well-known musicians as Dochas, Daimh, Simon Bradley from Asturian group Llan de Cubel, Luke Plumb of Shooglenifty, and Scottish piper Iain MacDonald.
