2011 Schools Program a Great Success!
Our Elementary School Program, “Introducing Our Celtic Culture”, was delivered to 11 schools reaching 2023 students and their educators during May -- Gaelic Awareness Month. 9 of the schools had not received the program in the past while 2 liked it so much they wanted it again! Artists Rachel Davis, Anita MacDonald, and Colin MacDonald all expressed what a positive experience it was for everyone involved.
Prior to the school presentations, we held a Professional Development Seminar for educators. There were 12 in attendance, and assistance was provided by the Arts Education Consultant for the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board, and was facilitated by Dawn MacDonald-Gillis. The purpose of the seminar was to draw connections between the schools presentation we deliver, and the Celtic Culture Curriculum Guide (“Celebrating Our Celtic Culture: A Teaching Resource).
This entire project received assistance from the NS Dept of Tourism Culture and Heritage (now Communities Culture and Heritage) through their Cultural Opportunities for Youth Program.
Another education-related event took place on May 24th when Celtic Colours was invited to participate in Health and Wellness Day at Oceanview Education Centre. Yvette teamed up with Laura Mercer to bring a presentation from Celtic Colours and CBMIC (Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative) to deliver to the Jr High students why Arts and Culture are an important part of wellness.
